Unpaid time off from new job?
I recently started a new job on June 22, working as a legal secretary at a firm in California. Were a small off-shoot of a few other branches in SoCal. I recently learned (on Monday) that my dad would be having significant surgery on August 7 and I emailed my manager on Tuesday (7/21) that I would like to take off from the 7th-17th to support my parents in his recovery. (I told her he would be having surgery). I know I haven’t accrued PTO, and said that I understood it would be unpaid. I also offered to work remotely part of the time (remote work is common). It’s Wednesday and I haven’t heard back. How likely is silence a way of denying the request, vs how likely is it I should ask her about it? I’m aware that asking for a week off so new is bad form, but in my last firm (bigger company and way busier) I took 2.5 weeks unpaid 3 weeks in to go to France (though this was mentioned in the interview). I also have no idea about what the policy is, as there wasn’t really a “guidebook/rulebook/new-hire documents” outside of information about the gov holidays and insurance benefits.
