Rant - Commuting to a job that can be done remotely is all sorts of BS
A widely held sentiment that I am just now totally understanding and feel like ranting about. For context I work an IT job that is completely in person when it can be done remotely. We do get a spontaneous remote day once every 4-6 months if management is feeling generous. The last remote day I realized all the tiredness I feel when I get home from work is completely avoided when I am not spending 50% of my limited energy getting ready and commuting. I was refreshed after working even though I was productive and got plenty done. Work is 8.5 hours (paid for 8) but total time I am dedicating to the job itself is closer to a 10 hour chunk of my day. It kinda feels like a scam where the time and money spent going to work is completely an expense on the employee's part. Yes, I hear ya'll laughing now. The energy used also affects my work via energy drain before work even starts. And I'm one of the luckier ones with a shorter commute. The boss is very cost conscious but for some reason insists on renting an office in an high cost city than letting employees wfh. The reason I was fine with on site work before I felt I wanted some human interaction or risk losing my ability to socialize. That part is not too bad, but I am over it. I love my home and being there too much. Plus not really a fan of the small talks I have to do when I cross paths with someone in the hallway or in the kitchen, which I try keep short. Lastly to not jynx myself I feel I have to add I am grateful to have a job regardless of all the inconveniences of it being on-site. But next I aim for a dire…
