My job expects me to travel up to an hour for cake, what do I do?

My workplace has an event during the second week of August where everyone is supposed to travel to another work location for catered food and cake. For me, that means taking a train for anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, even though my normal commute is only a 15-minute bus ride and I do not have a car. Then in September, there is another company event where everyone is travelling into the city to spend most of the day outside hanging around in a field. That’s a 4hr car ride and probably longer train ride… I genuinely do not understand why I should have to make these trips just to socialize and eat food I do not even want. I would much rather stay at my normal workplace and actually do my job instead of losing hours of my day travelling for cake or sitting outside with coworkers. This is my first full-time job, so I do not know if this is considered normal. Can I simply say no and continue working, or am I expected to participate in every company social event even when it has nothing to do with my actual job?
