I don’t discuss my pay
I know the general consensus is “not discussing pay only benefits the employer” and have had several coworkers ask me what I make. Pretty much every post I see on here regarding this is defending pay discussions among employees. I understand they everyone is trying to create a culture of transparency. I have always politely declined sharing the amount I make with coworkers, as I have heard several coworkers share their pay, and mine is significantly higher. Almost double what some of them make for the same job. I have been at the company the longest of everyone in my department, and have a lot more experience and knowledge than many of them. I go above and beyond, and see others do the bare minimum. I believe that my efforts to build a good relationship with my boss and work hard has led to me being compensated generously. I make significantly more than what Google states is the “high” pay range for my job title. I have received generous raises and am always given positive feedback on my performance. Do I want to make more? Of course. But the treatment I have received makes me appreciate my company. They are “playing favorites”, but I am a favorite because I am good at my job, loyal to the company, and know how to network and have good relationships with my superiors. My company is fairly small, and I would think that if I share my salary, word will get out to management in some way. I have empathy for the people making less than me, but times are tough and I have a lot of expenses. It seems that the person who is making the most loses in this situation.
