I almost got an offer letter

After 2 rounds of interviews, I was told I would receive an official offer letter by the end of the week. 2 weeks passed, and I emailed the job asking what was going on. I received a lengthy email stating that I was a great fit for the job but there is no funding for the position. They said they would love to hire me in the future when funds become available. I’m disappointed and confused because this is a large company. What do you mean you don’t have the funding? And if it was that they found someone else, why not just say that instead of getting my hopes up that you will hire me in the future. The hiring manager told me I should stay in touch so I emailed him 3 months later saying I’m still interested but I havent heard anything back. I guess I should let this one go :/
