failed an interview due to my certifications

I was interviewing with a proctoring company and it was going well, until the recuiter asked me if i had any certifications. I said I was studying for the COMPTIA+, she stopped me right there and said its against policy for proctors to be studying or have certification in exams the test takers were taking and then proceeded to say to me that the interview can no longer continue. I didn't even get a chance to get a word in. In desperation I said I would agree not to continue studying and that this position was more a priority for me. She agreed to take it off the interview notes. We concluded the interview and was shortly sent an email saying theyve moved onto other candidates. How could i have been prepared for that? How could i have known that this proctor company also happens to test people who are taking COMPTIA+? Im so confused and defeated. I just don't think its acceptable to be so cut throat in interviews like that. Especially for a low paying part time job like this one.
