Delays and Red Tape Starting New Contract Position
Hi all. I was furloughed from a full-time remote SWE gig in April. After some months of searching, applying, interviewing, etc. I finally got an offer via a recruiter (friend of my wife's family) for a W2 contract to hire position which is hybrid (2 days onsite) and located about half an hour from my home. The initial contract was gross , they had a clause saying I would not be paid for time that I billed but for whatever reason the client couldn't or wouldn't pay as well as another saying if I quit without a full two weeks notice I'd be liable for damages to the tune of my pay rate * every hour under 80 that I failed to prior notify. I asked for these to be stricken, they were struck, so I signed, estimated start date July 1st. Well July 1st came and went. "We're sorry, the start date is just an estimate, but you can't start until they send you equipment. If you want you can drive to (xyz city which is an hour and a half away from my house in light traffic) on the 8th and have your first day there, otherwise you'll have to wait until the 15th." 15th came and went, no equipment. This week started, no tracking number yet. 21st came and went... I'm 3 weeks into a signed contract saying I can't work for anyone else, and yet I'm still not being given work that I can bill in all this time. I resigned from my furloughed position to take this one, I've arranged for child care multiple times only to have to cancel. Can I just bail on this? At this point the contract doesn't seem very binding since they're not holding up their end of the deal. I can't jeopardize my unemployment.
