Company raised the salary range for my position above what I earn, but says current employees won’t be adjusted
I’ve worked for the same company for almost nine years, and I’ve been in my current role for seven of them. When I started, the salary range was roughly $52k to $78k. I came in at $55k and have received mostly 2 to 3 percent annual raises since then, plus one larger increase after a promotion that added more responsibilities without really changing my title. I currently make $71,400. Last week, I noticed the company had reposted my exact position because another department is expanding. Same title, same responsibilities, same experience requirements. The new salary range is $76k to $104k. So someone with the minimum qualifications could now be hired making almost $5k more than I do, while the top of the range is more than $30k above my salary. I asked my manager whether existing employees would receive a market adjustment. He said HR had updated the range to stay competitive with current hiring conditions, but there was no budget to adjust everyone already in the role. I asked how I could be considered below the minimum for a job I’ve successfully performed for seven years, especially when I train new hires and handle several of the team’s largest accounts. His answer was that salary ranges are “guidelines for recruitment” and don’t necessarily reflect what current employees should be making.
