Assessments and Personality Tests

I have been looking for a job for several months now and that's it's own whole rant, but I'm trying to understand why so many companies send out personality tests to applicants. If I make it to that point in the process, I haven't really heard back from the companies after I take it. I don't think my personality is that bad???? At least I hope not... But for real, does anybody know what they're looking for and if they rely pretty heavily on these when it comes to hiring? I personally think that they're kind of BS because I'm not convinced you can tell much about a person from asking questions and asking them how strongly they agree or disagree. They may hold some merit or capture some of my personality, but I don't want that to be the defining factor of my hiring when no one has spoken to me directly.
