The L. J. Wong Group on X-ray & Free Electron Quantum Nanophotonics is a leading research group in X-ray photonics, having been recognized as a 2024 Falling Walls Winner in Physical Sciences for “Breaking the Wall of Quantum X-ray Tech” by the Falling Walls Foundation. [Group website: https://sites.google.com/view/ljwgroup ]. We leverage advances in nanomaterials and quantum physics to realize breakthroughs in X-ray/EUV technologies for applications including EUV lithography and X-ray inspection.
We have three openings for Computational, Theoretical and/or Experimental talent – see below.
- Research Fellow, Computational EUV Nanophotonics
We are seeking a Research Fellow to spearhead cutting-edge research in the computational and theoretical modeling of free-electron-driven EUV nanophotonics. Working closely with experimentalists, the research fellow will lead the study of generating and manipulating EUV radiation on the nanoscale, towards the vision of a chip-scale, high-power EUV source for applications including EUV lithography and imaging.
Key responsibilities include:
Developing theoretical and numerical frameworks in free-electron-driven EUV nanophotonics, and performing simulations to mold the flow of EUV light using nanomaterials and nanostructures.
Programming of software tools
Required qualifications and competencies include:
Proficiency with electrodynamics and electromagnetism; familiarity with quantum physics/quantum electrodynamics is a plus.
Proficiency in scientific programming e.g., C, C++, Python etc.
- Research Fellow, Computational X-ray Nanophotonics for Phase Contrast Imaging
We are seeking a Research Fellow to spearhead cutting-edge research in the computational and theoretical modeling of free-electron-driven X-ray photonics. Working closely with experimentalists, the research fellow will lead the study of coherent X-ray emission from free-electron-driven van der Waals materials, and the use of this platform for realizing X-ray phase-contrast imaging on a table-top scale.
Key responsibilities include:
Developing theoretical and numerical frameworks in free-electron-driven X-ray nanophotonics– i.e., modeling the physics of free electrons impinging on nanomaterials like van der Waals crystals, and subsequent coherent X-ray emission and imaging processes.
Programming of software tools
Required qualifications and competencies include:
Proficiency with electrodynamics and electromagnetism; familiarity with quantum physics/quantum electrodynamics is a plus.
Proficiency in scientific programming e.g., C, C++, Python etc.
- Research Fellow, Experimental X-ray Nanophotonics for Phase Contrast Imaging
We are seeking a Research Fellow to spearhead cutting-edge research in the experimental study of free-electron-driven X-ray photonics, with the goal of using such a source to achieve X-ray phase-contrast imaging on a table-top scale.
Key responsibilities include:
Spearheading experiments on free-electron-driven X-ray nanophotonics and phase-contrast imaging in customized scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) setups
Characterization of material samples and equipment related to experimental objectives
Required qualifications and competencies include:
Familiarity with the use of vacuum electronics and/or free-electron-based equipment, including but not limited to SEMs and TEMs
Background in free-electron-driven nanophotonics and X-ray generation is a major bonus
Additional Information
For all roles, key responsibilities also include:
Leading papers and publishing in high-impact journals.
Presenting at top-tier international conferences.
Assisting in supervision graduate and undergraduate students
Assisting PI in writing grants.
Assisting PI in performing logistics related to the project
And for all roles, required qualifications and competencies also include:
PhD degree in physics, engineering or related field.
Competent in teamwork and presenting results in informative visuals.
Interpersonal skill: Ability to work under pressure, Ability to work independently, develop solutions under strict timelines, meticulous and eye for details, excellent organizational / time management skills
