- Birmingham, United Kingdom
- School of Chemistry
Applications are sought for a fully funded PhD 3-year studentship position in the School of Chemistry at the University of Birmingham (UoB) in collaboration with the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl). Background. We focus on a class of materials termed molecular capsules ( doi.org/10.1039/D4CS00761A ) that have potential applications as supramolecular hosts for sensing, separations and catalysis. Computational chemistry allows the design and discovery of new molecules and theoretical understanding. This is especially important when studying the behaviour of sensitive chemicals,
PhD Studentship: Microlocal analysis and its applications in quantum resonances, partial differential equations with analytic or Gevrey regularity, and several complex variables
- Birmingham, United Kingdom
- School of Mathematics
- Dr Haoren Xiong
Microlocal analysis explores the classical/quantum correspondence in partial differential equations (PDEs). For example, the concept of symbol quantisation in the theory of pseudodifferential operators links classical observables (functions on phase space) with quantum operators. Microlocal analysis also provides essential tools to rigorously define, compute, and analyse resonances, which describe the oscillation and decay of waves in systems where energy can escape to infinity, replacing eigenvalues and eigenfunction expansions in non-compact domains. The consideration of analytic or Gevrey r
PhD Studentship: Mitochondrial DNA repair
- Birmingham, United Kingdom
- School of Biosciences
Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship in Professor Hansong Ma's laboratory within the School of Biosciences, University of Birmingham. The successful candidate will investigate the mechanisms governing mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) transmission and maintenance. The project will combine genetic, cell biological, and molecular approaches using both Drosophila and human cell models to uncover the fundamental principles that regulate mtDNA inheritance and stability. Further information about the research programme can be found on the Ma Lab website: themalab.co.uk. The studentshi
PhD Studentship: Mathematical biology and population dynamics
- Birmingham, United Kingdom
- School of Mathematics
- Mobility Grants China-UK
This PhD project will develop mathematical models to investigate population dynamics in biological systems. Combining dynamical systems theory, mathematical modelling, and data-driven approaches, the research will explore how populations change over time in response to ecological interactions, environmental variability, and other biological processes. The project aims to provide new theoretical insights and quantitative tools for understanding complex population behaviour. Funding notes: For UK and EU candidates: Funding may be available through a college or EPSRC scholarship in competition wi
PhD Studentship: Analysis of partial differential equations
- Birmingham, United Kingdom
- School of Mathematics
- Mobility Grants China-UK
This PhD project will investigate partial differential equations arising from kinetic models, with a particular focus on variational methods. The research will explore how variational structures, energy principles, and gradient-flow techniques can be used to analyse the existence, regularity, stability, and long-time behaviour of solutions to kinetic PDEs. The project aims to develop rigorous mathematical tools for understanding the connection between microscopic particle dynamics and macroscopic continuum descriptions. Funding notes: For UK and EU candidates: Funding may be available through
PhD Studentship: Designing Human-AI Teams for Meaningful Human Control of 'Machine-Speed' Operations
- Birmingham, United Kingdom
- School of Computer Science
The Centre for National Training and Research Excellence in Understanding Behaviour (Centre-UB) is inviting applications for a Doctoral Studentship in association with BAE Systems, to start from 4 January 2027. This PhD explores the design of human-AI teams when the AI agents operate at ‘machine-speed’ (i.e., significantly faster than human cognitive and communication capabilities). The research will be applicable to command teams working in uncertain and information-degraded environments. Meaningful human control is necessary when humans have to be retained in or on the loop. This requires th
PhD Studentship: Regularized dynamical parametric approximations for gradient flows
- Birmingham, United Kingdom
- School of Mathematics
Parametric integrators approximate solutions of (high-dimensional) partial differential equations by restricting the numerical approximation to a closed form that nonlinearly depends on, and is identified by, a set of parameters. Such methods are a popular choice in quantum dynamics, where the wavefunctions of many-body systems are approximated by multiple Gaussians. The methodology of interest further appears in the approximation of various dynamical problems by tensor networks and neural networks. In all these cases, the parametrization is typically irregular, meaning that the occurring line

PhD Studentship: Robust Bayesian Experimental Design and Inference
- Birmingham, United Kingdom
- School of Mathematics
Statistical methods are leveraged in many scientific applications to: specify a data collection practice (experimental design), draw conclusions from sparse and noisy data (inference), and assess uncertainty about those conclusions (uncertainty quantification). Bayesian inference and experimental design methods are increasingly used in scientific practice, and offer appealing theoretical guarantees when certain assumptions hold. However, whether these assumptions hold is difficult or impossible to verify in practice. The successful candidate will undertake a project in the area of statistics/d
PhD Studentship: Searching for New Physics with Highly Charged Ion Clocks
- Birmingham, United Kingdom
- Physics and Astronomy
Some of the biggest open questions in modern physics concern the limits of the Standard Model and General Relativity. The nature of dark matter and dark energy remains unknown, and many theories attempting to tackle this problem predict that the fundamental constants may vary in space or time. Atomic clocks provide an exceptionally sensitive way of testing this possibility. Their reach is ultimately determined not only by how precisely they can measure frequency, but also by how strongly their transitions respond to changes in the fundamental constants. This PhD project aims to develop a new t
PhD Studentship: Direct Recycling of Next-Generation Battery Materials for Sustainable and Circular Manufacturing
- Birmingham, United Kingdom
- School of Metallurgy and Materials
The transition to electrified transport and renewable energy storage is driving unprecedented growth in battery manufacturing. However, large-scale battery production generates significant quantities of manufacturing scrap, including coated electrode off-cuts and rejected cells, which contain valuable active materials that are currently underutilised. The development of efficient recycling technologies is therefore essential to support a sustainable and resilient battery supply chain. This PhD project, in the Energy Materials Group, at the University of Birmingham, will investigate advanced di
PhD Studentship: Computational Chemistry Driven Design of Improved Thermal Batteries
- Birmingham, United Kingdom
- School of Chemistry
Thermal batteries (often termed primary reserve batteries) offer several key advantages over primary and secondary batteries due to their long shelf life, high temperature stability, quick activation, reliability, robustness and the fact that they are maintenance-free. Despite these many advantages, the exact mechanisms that control performance in industrially utilised thermal batteries has remained unclear for decades, and thus design principles for discovering new thermal battery materials have been lacking. In this industrially sponsored PhD studentship, we have partnered with AWE fund a 3.
PhD Studentship: Bioresorbable intestinal devices with embedded resorbable sensors for gastrointestinal monitoring
- Birmingham, United Kingdom
- Electronic, Electrical and Systems Engineering
- Dr Gerard Cummins
Swallowable sensors are limited by how long they stay in place. A capsule passes through the gut within a day or two, so it can only take a snapshot when conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease need to be tracked over weeks without the risk of obstruction. Devices that stay longer exist, but they carry a problem. A structure designed to resist peristalsis is also a structure that can obstruct the bowel, and that risk is why intestinal residence has largely been abandoned in favour of the stomach. Attempts to solve it have relied on external magnets, tissue-piercing anchors, or adhesives
