About this position

We are working on creating a new type of Radio-Frequency Integrated Circuit technology based on optically induced plasmas in silicon to create photo-conductive switches. This combines low-cost lasers with silicon integrated circuits, fabricated in-house, to make best-in-class switches, attenuators and phase shifters. The technology is very broadband (measured to 250GHz), high power (tested to 20Watts) and very linear with extremely low intermodulation products.

This website outlines the technology advantages : www.plasmaris.com

This PhD project aims to continue the more than 10 years of research work that has been carried out at Bristol. It aims to move the technology to more scalable packaging and involves electromagnetic modelling, cleanroom fabrication and on-wafer probe testing.

You will be working in the group of Professor Martin Cryan and will be a member of the Photonics and Quantum Research group which comprises around 50 Academics, Post-doctoral researchers and PhD students with access to world class design, fabrication and testing facilities.

If you are excited about the unique opportunity to work at the cutting edge of RF to millimetrewave integrated circuit technology you should apply for this project.

PhD Studentship: Electromagnetic Sensing for High-Temperature Microstructural Evolution

University of Warwick · WMG

  • Coventry, United Kingdom
  • WMG

This PhD redefines electromagnetic sensing by moving beyond magnetic permeability-dominated approaches to establish a conductivity-driven eddy-current framework for tracking microstructural evolution at high temperature. The transition towards smarter, lower-carbon manufacturing demands new ways to understand and monitor how materials evolve during processing. This PhD project addresses a fundamental and timely challenge in electromagnetic (EM) sensing: how to quantitatively link electrical conductivity–dominated eddy current responses to microstructural evolution during high-temperature proce
