The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology is organized into seven research programmes which all focus on different areas of cell and molecular biology: Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, Microbiology and Immunology, Molecular Biology, Molecular Biophysics, Molecular Evolution, Molecular Systems Biology and Structural Biology. The scientific basis of what we do lies in biology, but our research overlaps with other areas such as medicine, computer science, mathematics, chemistry, engineering sciences and physics. In total, we are over 200 staff and ~60 Ph.D. students.

The position will be associated with the Uppsala University's Cryo-EM facility ( https://www.uu.se/en/department/cell-and-molecular-biology/research/infrastructures/cryo-em ), which is an independent cross-program Departmental facility co-directed by Dr. Sundborger-Lunna and Dr. Marcia and open to all scientists at Uppsala University and beyond. The position will contribute to the development of cryo-ET at Uppsala University and facilitate its application across a broad range of research projects, supporting among other activities the newly established Centers for Molecular Dynamics and for Infection Biology, two interdisciplinary initiatives bringing together expertise and infrastructure for studying the structure, dynamics and function of biological systems and mechanisms of antimicrobial drug resistance, respectively.
The successful candidate will work closely with researchers from different scientific disciplines, providing expertise in cryo-ET while contributing to the continued development of methods, workflows and infrastructure. The position provides substantial opportunities to participate in collaborative research, develop new cryo-ET approaches and, depending on the candidate's interests and expertise, pursue independent research and method development.
Duties
The primary responsibility of the position is to facilitate and develop cryo-ET research at Uppsala University and within the Center for Molecular Dynamics.
The duties include:
- Supporting researchers in the design and execution of cryo-ET experiments, from experimental planning and sample preparation to data collection, processing and interpretation.
- Developing, implementing and optimizing workflows for cryo-ET sample preparation, data acquisition and data processing.
- Supporting and training users in cryo-ET methods and associated instrumentation and software.
- Contributing to the establishment, operation and continued development of cryo-ET infrastructure and associated workflows at Uppsala University.
- Working collaboratively with researchers across different disciplines to identify how cryo-ET can best address their scientific questions.
- Contributing to method development in areas relevant to cryo-ET and structural and cellular biology.
- Establishing and maintaining documentation, protocols and best practices to ensure robust and reproducible workflows.
- Participating in collaborative research projects and, where appropriate, contributing to scientific publications.
- Opportunities exist to pursue independent research and methodological development within the broader scientific goals of the facility.
Requirements
The applicant must have:
- A PhD in structural biology, molecular or cell biology, biophysics, biochemistry, or another relevant field.
- Hands-on experience with cryo-ET (including sample preparation, data collection and data processing).
- A strong interest in developing and applying cryo-ET methods to biological research questions.
- Ability to work independently and take responsibility for developing and maintaining experimental and computational workflows.
- Excellent ability to collaborate with researchers from different scientific backgrounds.
- Good communication skills and the ability to explain complex methods and concepts to users with different levels of experience.
- Excellent command of spoken and written English.
Because the position involves extensive interaction with researchers and facility users, particular emphasis will be placed on scientific curiosity, problem-solving ability, service-mindedness, initiative and the ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment.
Additional qualifications
The following experience is considered particularly advantageous:
- Experience with cryo-correlative light and electron microscopy (cryo-CLEM).
- Experience with subtomogram averaging and/or advanced cryo-ET image-processing workflows.
- Experience with commonly used cryo-ET software and computational workflows.
- Experience developing or implementing new cryo-EM/cryo-ET methods.
- Experience working in a research infrastructure, core facility or other collaborative research environment.
- Experience training and supporting researchers in advanced microscopy techniques.
About the employment
The employment is a permanent position (probationary period may be applied). Scope of employment: 100%. Starting date as agreed.
