If you want to stay in academia
- Publish steadily through the PhD — the job market reads your record, not your effort.
- Present at the main conferences in your field and meet people; most postdocs come from a personal connection.
- Line up a postdoc 9–12 months before you submit your thesis.
- Teaching experience matters for university jobs in Bangladesh and for teaching-focused roles abroad.
- Build an independent research identity — work that is yours, not only your supervisor's.
If you want industry
- Start internships and co-ops in the first year; in the USA, summer internships are the main pipeline into full-time offers.
- Use the university career centre — CV review, mock interviews and employer fairs are included in your fees.
- Learn the local interview format: behavioural interviews, take-home tasks, and technical screens.
- Understand your visa's sponsorship reality early; some employers filter out candidates who will need sponsorship.
